How to convert WMA to MP3
Step 1: Drop your .wma files on the box above, a whole folder at once if you like.
Step 2: Pick a Bitrate: match the WMA’s quality, 128 kbps for most ripped CDs, 192 kbps to be safe.
Step 3: Press Convert. The first time, the FFmpeg engine (about 31 MB) downloads and is cached for later.
Step 4: Download the MP3s as one ZIP.

Settings explained
- Bitrate
- 128 kbps is fine for speech, 192 kbps for music, 320 kbps is the MP3 maximum.
- OGG codec
- Godot, Unity and older players need Vorbis. Vorbis uses the FFmpeg engine (≈31 MB, downloaded once).
- Opus: Smaller
- Vorbis: Games, older players
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- FFmpeg (when needed)
- Older formats and a few filters use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It downloads once (about 31 MB) the first time it is needed and is cached for offline use.
- Hardware video engine
- Video is decoded and encoded by your device’s media hardware through WebCodecs — usually several times faster than real time.
WMA vs MP3
Both are lossy formats from the same era. WMA was Microsoft’s default for ripping CDs in Windows Media Player; MP3 won the compatibility race. Converting keeps the music and gains playback almost everywhere.
| WMA | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Microsoft (Windows Media Audio) | MPEG / Fraunhofer |
| Plays on iPhone, Mac, Android, cars | Rarely without extra apps | Yes |
| Can carry DRM | Yes, for some old store purchases and subscriptions | No |
| Decoded here by | FFmpeg engine in the browser | Browser’s own decoder |
What is a WMA file?
A WMA file is audio compressed with Microsoft’s Windows Media Audio codec, usually inside an ASF container. Windows Media Player used it as the default for ripping CDs in the 2000s, which is why old music folders are full of them. Today Apple devices, most Android players and many car stereos cannot play them, while MP3 works on all of them.
How to convert WMA to MP3 without software
Open this page in any modern browser and drop the files. There is nothing to install: browsers cannot decode WMA themselves, so the page loads a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, decodes each file on your computer and encodes the MP3. The engine is cached after the first download, so later batches start at once, even offline.
Can protected WMA files be converted?
No. WMA files bought from old music stores or downloaded through subscription services were often locked with Windows Media DRM. The audio inside is encrypted, so no honest converter can decode it, and the file fails with a clear “couldn’t read the audio” message while the rest of the batch continues. Unprotected WMA files, such as CDs you ripped yourself, convert normally.
Does WMA to MP3 lose quality?
Slightly, because one lossy format is decoded and re-encoded into another. Choose an MP3 bitrate at or a step above the WMA’s, and the difference is very hard to hear. Raising the bitrate far above the original only makes bigger files.
Tips & troubleshooting
Tags such as title and artist are not read from WMA files. To write them while converting, use the audio bitrate converter, which has tag fields.
Mixed folder of WMA, M4A and WAV files? The MP3 converter takes them all in one batch.
Old rips at different volumes? Even them out afterwards with normalize audio.
WMA to MP3 Converter FAQ
How do I convert WMA to MP3 without installing software?
Drop the WMA files on this page and press Convert. A WebAssembly FFmpeg engine decodes them inside your browser, so there is nothing to install and nothing is uploaded.
Can protected WMA files be converted?
No. DRM-protected WMA is encrypted and cannot be decoded. Those files are reported as unreadable, and every unprotected file in the batch still converts.
Why is the first conversion slower?
The FFmpeg engine, about 31 MB, downloads once on first use. After that it is cached by your browser, so later conversions start immediately and also work offline.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Decoding and encoding both happen in your browser on your device; no server ever receives your music.
