PNG to JPG Converter
Convert PNG to JPG and make big images small: a photo saved as PNG often shrinks by 80–90% with no difference you can see. Pick the quality, choose what colour fills transparent areas, and convert a whole batch at once. It all runs in your browser, so the files stay on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Settings explained
- Lossless
- Pixel-perfect, larger files.
- Fill transparent areas with
- JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels get this colour.
- Keep metadata (EXIF)
- Off removes camera details, dates and GPS location — safer when sharing. On keeps them.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- WebAssembly codecs
- Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
PNG vs JPG: which should I use?
Use JPG for photographs and PNG for graphics. JPG throws away detail your eye barely notices, which makes photos small. PNG keeps every pixel, which keeps text, lines and transparency perfect but makes photos huge. Converting PNG to JPG is right when the picture is a photo or when a form insists on JPG.
| Feature | PNG | JPG (JPEG) |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy, adjustable quality |
| Photo file size | Large | 4–16× smaller in our test (95% to 70% quality) |
| Transparency | Yes | No: filled with a solid colour |
| Text and sharp lines | Perfectly crisp | Slight fuzz around edges |
| Re-saving | No loss, ever | Small loss each time it is re-encoded |
| Accepted by forms and print shops | Often | Almost always |
| Best for | Screenshots, logos, diagrams, cut-outs | Photos, email, documents, uploads |
What is a PNG file?
A PNG file (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It stores every pixel exactly, supports full transparency and is what phones, computers and design apps use for screenshots and exported graphics.
That precision is the problem with photos. A camera picture saved as PNG keeps millions of slightly different colours without discarding any, so it is several times the size of the same picture as JPG. That is the moment to convert PNG to JPG.
How much smaller does a PNG get as JPG?
For photos, a lot. We converted a 1122 × 1402 photo saved as a 2.0 MB PNG with this tool at different qualities; the results are below. The resolution never changes, only the bytes. Screenshots shrink less, and the edges of letters get slightly soft, so they are a weaker case for JPG.
| JPG quality | File size | Smaller by |
|---|---|---|
| 95% | 483 KB | 76% |
| 90% | 350 KB | 83% |
| 88% (this page’s default) | 257 KB | 87% |
| 80% | 194 KB | 90% |
| 70% | 128 KB | 94% |
Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
Yes, a little: JPG is lossy, so the converter discards some fine detail to save space. At 85–90% the change is invisible on photos. It becomes noticeable on hard edges, such as text in a screenshot, thin lines in a chart or a logo on a flat colour, where JPG leaves faint ripples.
The pixel dimensions never change, and private metadata is not carried over unless you switch it on. If the image must stay pixel-perfect, keep it as PNG and shrink it with Compress PNG instead.
What happens to transparency when I convert PNG to JPG?
JPG has no transparency, so every transparent or semi-transparent pixel is blended onto a solid colour. This page lets you choose it under Fill transparent areas with; white is the default. Pick the colour of the page, slide or product listing the image will sit on and the edges blend in cleanly.
If you need the background to stay see-through, do not convert to JPG at all. Keep the PNG, or use the PNG to WebP converter for a smaller file that still has transparency.
Can I convert PNG to JPG by renaming the file?
No. Renaming image.png to image.jpg changes only the label; the data inside is still PNG. Some apps open it anyway because they check the content, but upload forms that verify the file type, print services and older software will reject or misread it. Converting re-encodes the pixels as real JPEG data, which is what those systems expect.
Convert PNG to JPG on Windows 11, Mac, iPhone or Android
The converter works the same in every modern browser. These are the built-in alternatives, useful for a single file.
Windows 11 and 10
Open the PNG in Paint and choose File → Save as → JPEG picture. Paint fills transparency with white and gives no quality control; for batches or a chosen quality, drop the files here.
Mac
In Preview, choose File → Export, set Format to JPEG and drag the quality slider. Here you can convert many files at once and pick the fill colour.
iPhone and iPad
Screenshots are saved as PNG. Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone, choose Photo Library and select them; the JPGs can be saved back to Photos or Files.
Android
Screenshots are often PNG too. In Chrome, tap the drop zone, pick them from Screenshots or Downloads and the JPGs land in Downloads.
Tips & troubleshooting
Upload form with a size limit, like “under 100 KB”? Convert here, then use Compress Image to KB to hit the number exactly.
Screenshots full of text look sharper as WebP than as JPG at the same size; try PNG to WebP if the destination accepts it.
Huge exports from design tools: set Max size (longest side) under Advanced settings to 2048 px to get a lighter JPG.
Converting the other way later will not restore lost detail; keep the original PNGs if you might edit again.
PNG to JPG Converter FAQ
How do I convert PNG to JPG on Windows 11?
For one file, open it in Paint and use File → Save as → JPEG picture. For many files, or to set the quality and the fill colour, drop them on this page in Chrome or Edge, press Convert and download the ZIP.
Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
Slightly, because JPG is lossy. At the default 88% photos look unchanged; text and sharp edges may show faint artefacts. The resolution stays exactly the same.
Can I convert PNG to JPG by renaming the file?
No. Renaming changes the extension, not the data, so many forms and programs will still see a PNG and may reject it. Converting re-encodes the image as genuine JPEG.
What happens to the transparent background?
It is filled with a solid colour, white unless you choose another under “Fill transparent areas with”. To keep it transparent, stay with PNG or convert to WebP.
Is JPG a good choice for screenshots?
It works, but it is not the best. Text and flat colours compress well in PNG and WebP, and JPG leaves faint fuzz around letters. Our text screenshot was 22.0 KB as JPG and 18.0 KB as lossless WebP. Try PNG to WebP or Compress PNG.
Is my file uploaded when I convert PNG to JPG?
No. ProMedia converts in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is also no file-size cap or waiting queue.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Very large photos can exceed what a phone browser can handle: Safari on iPhone and iPad lets a web page edit images of up to about 16 megapixels. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
