AVIF to JPG Converter

Convert AVIF to JPG so images you saved from the web open in any app, editor or upload form. Add one file or a whole batch, keep the quality at 90% or adjust it, and download standard JPGs. The converter carries its own AVIF decoder, so it works even where your system cannot open AVIF, and nothing is uploaded.

AVIF vs JPG: why convert at all?

AVIF stores a photo in far fewer bytes than JPG and supports transparency, HDR and high bit depths. JPG wins on one point that often matters more: everything opens it. Converting AVIF to JPG gives up file size in exchange for that universal support.

What is an AVIF file?

An AVIF file (AV1 Image File Format) is an image compressed with the AV1 video codec and stored in the same HEIF container family as iPhone HEIC photos. The Alliance for Open Media, whose members include Google, Netflix, Microsoft and Apple, published it in 2019 as a royalty-free format.

Websites adopt AVIF because it cuts page weight: a photo can be a fraction of the JPG size at similar quality. Chrome supports it since version 85 (2020), Firefox since 93 (2021) and Safari since 16 (2022), so many sites now deliver AVIF automatically, and that is the file you get when you save the image.

How to open AVIF files on Windows and Mac

The quickest viewer is a browser: drag the AVIF into a Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari tab. Opening it in other programs is less predictable, which is usually when people decide to convert AVIF to JPG instead.

Windows 11 and 10

The Photos app shows AVIF once Microsoft’s free AV1 Video Extension is installed from the Microsoft Store. Older editors and Office versions may still refuse the file; a converted JPG works everywhere.

Mac

Recent macOS versions display AVIF in Safari. If an app on your Mac will not open one, drop the file here and use the JPG.

iPhone and iPad

Safari on iOS 16 and later shows AVIF. To convert, tap the drop zone on this page, choose the files and save the JPGs to Files or Photos.

Android

Chrome displays AVIF. To get a JPG for an app that refuses it, open this page, pick the files and find the JPGs in Downloads.

Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

Very little. The AVIF is decoded to full pixels and saved once as JPG with MozJPEG; at 90% the result looks the same as the AVIF on screen. The JPG will be larger: our 161 KB test photo became 361 KB. Lowering the quality to 80% is a reasonable trade for email or chat. Transparent areas, which JPG cannot store, are filled with the colour you choose.

AVIF vs WebP: which is better?

Both beat JPG on size. AVIF usually compresses photos further, especially at low file sizes, and can store HDR and 10- or 12-bit colour. WebP encodes faster and has been supported for longer, which matters for older browsers and apps. For websites, many teams serve AVIF with a WebP or JPG fallback; for a single file you need to open somewhere, the answer is often neither, and a JPG is the safe choice.

Platform support follows the same order. WordPress, for example, has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8 (2021) and AVIF only since 6.5 (2024), so older sites and plugins may reject AVIF entirely.

Why convert AVIF to JPG with ProMedia

  • Works without system support. If the browser cannot decode an AVIF itself, the page falls back to its own WebAssembly decoder.
  • Private. Files are converted on your device; nothing is uploaded or stored.
  • Bulk and quality control. Convert many files at once and choose the JPG quality, fill colour and maximum size.
  • Free, offline-capable, no watermark. No account, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Need a transparent result instead of a filled background? Use AVIF to PNG.

  • Uploading to a form with a KB limit? Convert, then use Compress Image to KB to land just under the number.

  • Large AVIF wallpapers: set Max size (longest side) under Advanced settings to 1920 px for a lighter JPG.

  • Have a mix of AVIF, WebP and HEIC files? The image converter takes them all in one batch.

AVIF to JPG Converter FAQ

What is an AVIF file?

An AVIF file is an image compressed with the AV1 codec, released in 2019 by the Alliance for Open Media. It is much smaller than JPG at similar quality, which is why websites use it, but many apps and forms still cannot open it.

How do I open AVIF files on Windows?

Drag the file into Chrome, Edge or Firefox to view it. For the Photos app, install Microsoft’s free AV1 Video Extension. To use the image in any other program, convert it to JPG here.

How do I convert AVIF to JPG on Windows or Mac?

Open this page in any current browser, drop the AVIF files on the box, keep the quality at 90% and press Convert. Download the JPGs separately or as a ZIP. No software installation is needed.

Why do websites save images as AVIF?

Smaller images make pages load faster. Sites detect that your browser supports AVIF and send it instead of JPG or PNG, so “Save image as” gives you an .avif file even when the site uploaded a JPG.

Why is the JPG bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF compresses far more efficiently. The same picture needs more bytes as a JPG: our test photo went from 161 KB to 361 KB at 90% quality. Lower the quality slider if size matters.

My browser cannot show AVIF. Will the conversion still work?

Yes. If the browser has no AVIF decoder, ProMedia uses its own WebAssembly decoder to read the file and then saves the JPG.

Is it safe to convert AVIF to JPG online?

On this page, yes: the converter runs inside your browser, so the files are never sent anywhere. There is no server copy to delete afterwards.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Very large photos can exceed what a phone browser can handle: Safari on iPhone and iPad lets a web page edit images of up to about 16 megapixels. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
