Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. A PNG copy is a perfect record of the JPG as it is now, including any blur or blocky artefacts the JPG already has. What PNG adds is protection: you can edit and save it again and again without losing anything more. That, plus compatibility, is the real reason to convert JPG to PNG.

What is a JPG file?

A JPG file (also written JPEG, from the Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the standard photo format since 1992. It saves space by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss, which is why phone and camera photos, web images and email attachments are almost always JPG. The .jpg and .jpeg endings are the same format.

The catch is that every save throws a little more detail away, and the format has no transparency. Converting JPG to PNG freezes the picture losslessly, which suits editing, design work and upload systems that only take PNG.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG compresses losslessly, and photos have too much fine variation for lossless compression to shrink well. Expect a converted photo to be several times larger. Our 1536 × 1024 test photo went from a 337 KB JPG to a 2.9 MB PNG, almost nine times the size, with no visible change.

That is normal and not a sign of better quality. If the size matters, keep the JPG for sharing and use the PNG only where PNG is required. For screenshots or drawings saved as JPG, the PNG grows far less.

How do I convert JPG to PNG with a transparent background?

Converting alone cannot do it, because a JPG stores a solid background and PNG simply keeps it. To get a see-through background, open the background remover instead: it cuts out the person or product on your device with an AI model and saves a transparent PNG directly. You do not need to convert first.

For logos on a plain white background, the PNG to SVG converter has a Drop white background switch that leaves out near-white areas while tracing the logo into vector shapes.

Can I convert JPG to PNG without losing quality?

Yes. The JPG is decoded once and written to PNG without any lossy step, so the PNG matches the decoded JPG pixel for pixel. Photos also come out the right way up: if the camera stored the rotation as an EXIF flag, it is applied to the pixels. Camera details and location are left out unless you switch on Keep metadata (EXIF) under Advanced settings.

Why use this converter

  • Private by default. Photos are converted inside your browser and never uploaded, and EXIF location data is dropped unless you keep it.
  • Batches without limits. Add as many photos as you like; there is no file cap, queue or daily quota.
  • Real PNG files. The output is genuine PNG data, so strict upload checks accept it, not a renamed JPG.
  • Free, no watermark, offline-capable. No account needed, and the page works offline once it has loaded.

Convert JPG to PNG on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac

Open this page in any current browser and the converter works the same way. The built-in tools are fine for a single file.

iPhone and iPad

Open this page in Safari, tap the drop zone and pick the photos from your library. Save the PNGs to Files, or long-press a result to add it to Photos.

Android

In Chrome, tap the drop zone, choose the JPGs from your gallery or Downloads, convert, and the PNGs are saved to Downloads.

Windows

Paint converts one image with File → Save as → PNG picture. For many files, drag them from File Explorer onto this page and download a ZIP.

Mac

Preview exports a single photo with File → Export → PNG. When you have more than a few, select them all in Finder and drop them here.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Making a sticker or logo? Run the photo through the background remover first; it outputs a transparent PNG.

  • PNG too large to upload? Try Compress PNG: a 256-colour palette often cuts the size by more than half on graphics.

  • Converting scans of documents? A PNG keeps text crisp for later editing; for emailing, a JPG is far smaller.

  • Keep your original JPGs: converting back from PNG to JPG adds a second round of compression.

  • Template or print shop asks for a specific pixel size as well? Convert, then set the exact width and height in the image resizer.

JPG to PNG Converter FAQ

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG copies the JPG’s pixels exactly, including existing artefacts. It only prevents further loss when you edit and save again. To improve a small or soft photo, try the AI image upscaler.

How do I convert JPG to PNG with a transparent background?

Use the background remover instead of a plain converter. It cuts out the subject on your device and saves a transparent PNG; a normal conversion keeps the original background.

How do I convert JPG to PNG on iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap the box, pick the photos, press Convert and save the PNGs to Files or Photos. No app is needed and nothing is uploaded.

Can I convert JPG to PNG without losing quality?

Yes. The process is lossless: the PNG holds exactly the pixels decoded from the JPG at the same resolution. Only the file size changes, usually upwards.

Why convert JPG to PNG?

Usually because a site, template or app requires PNG, or because you plan to edit the image repeatedly and do not want each save to lose detail. For sharing photos, JPG remains the better format.

Is JPEG to PNG the same as JPG to PNG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are two spellings of the same format, and this converter accepts .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif files.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Very large photos can exceed what a phone browser can handle: Safari on iPhone and iPad lets a web page edit images of up to about 16 megapixels. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
