Settings explained
- Lossless
- Pixel-perfect, larger files.
- Fill transparent areas with
- JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels get this colour.
- Keep metadata (EXIF)
- Off removes camera details, dates and GPS location — safer when sharing. On keeps them.
Formats
Batch-friendly: add many files and they are processed one after another — if one fails, the rest still finish.
How it runs
- WebAssembly codecs
- Images are encoded with Squoosh-grade codecs (MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG, JPEG XL). Each codec loads only when you use it.
- GPU canvas
- Pixels are drawn and composited with the GPU-accelerated canvas.
HEIC vs PNG: what changes when you convert
HEIC is a compact, lossy camera format; PNG is a large, lossless editing format. Converting HEIC to PNG keeps the photo exactly as decoded and makes it readable almost anywhere, but the file grows several times. You gain compatibility and safe re-editing, not extra detail.
| Feature | HEIC | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy (HEVC) | Lossless |
| Typical size of one iPhone photo | Small | Several times larger |
| Our 1536 × 1024 test photo | 289 KB | 2.5 MB |
| Re-saving after edits | Each save may lose a little | No loss, ever |
| Transparency | Supported, rarely used by cameras | Supported |
| Opens on Windows without add-ons | No | Yes |
| Opens in Chrome and Firefox | No | Yes |
Should I convert HEIC to JPG or PNG?
For most people, JPG: it is a fraction of the size and looks the same, which is what you want for sharing, email, websites and upload forms. Pick PNG when the photo is going into an editing workflow, when a print or design service asks for lossless files, or when you plan to cut out the subject and need room for transparency later.
| Next step | Best format | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Send, post or upload | JPG | Small and accepted everywhere |
| Edit in Photoshop, GIMP or Canva | PNG | No new loss each time you save |
| Cut out the background | PNG | Keeps the transparency you add |
| Print at a lab | PNG or high-quality JPG | Check what the lab accepts |
| Make a PDF of several photos | HEIC to PDF | One document, no separate conversion |
Does converting HEIC to PNG reduce quality?
No. The HEIC is decoded once and written to PNG without any further compression, so the PNG contains exactly what your iPhone stored, at the same resolution. Photos are turned upright using the rotation saved in the file.
Three limits are worth knowing. The PNG has 8 bits per colour channel, the standard for images on screens. A HEIC that holds several images, such as a burst or a depth map, gives you the main photo only. And Safari on iPhone and iPad lets a page edit images of up to about 16 megapixels, so 24 MP and 48 MP shots converted on the phone come out at roughly 16 MP.
What is a HEIC file, and how is it different from HEIF?
A HEIC file is a photo stored the way iPhones have saved pictures by default since 2017: HEVC-compressed image data inside a HEIF container, which keeps files small. A HEIF file (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a container standardised by MPEG that can hold images compressed with different codecs. HEIC is the common case: HEIF with HEVC-compressed images, the variant iPhones and many Android phones write, usually with a .heic ending. Some cameras and phones write .heif or .hif instead.
For converting, the difference does not matter. This page accepts .heic, .heif and .hif files and converts them the same way.
How to convert HEIC to PNG on Windows or Mac
This converter runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, so the steps are identical on both systems. The built-in routes differ.
Windows 10 and 11
Without Microsoft’s HEIF and HEVC extensions, Windows cannot even preview HEIC. You do not need them here: Chrome and Edge decode HEIC with the converter’s own WebAssembly decoder.
Mac
Preview exports one photo with File → Export → PNG, and the Photos app and Finder’s right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image (macOS 12 and later) can convert a selection. For a whole set of HEIC files from a phone backup, you can also drop them here and get one ZIP.
iPhone and iPad
Open this page in Safari, tap the box, choose Photo Library and select the pictures. Safari decodes HEIC natively, so the conversion is quick; save the PNGs to Files.
Android
Phones that shoot HEIF (often called “high efficiency pictures”) work the same: open the page in Chrome, pick the photos and the PNGs go to Downloads.
Why convert HEIC to PNG with ProMedia
- Your photos stay yours. Decoding and saving happen in your browser; upload-based converters receive every photo, including the GPS location many of them carry.
- Location removed by default. EXIF data is left out unless you switch on Keep metadata (EXIF), which writes it into the PNG.
- No caps. Convert a whole camera roll in batches; nothing limits the number or size of files.
- Works offline once the page and its decoder have loaded, on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.
Tips & troubleshooting
PNGs from a full camera roll take a lot of space; for archiving rather than editing, HEIC to JPG at 90% is a better fit.
Want a cut-out of a person or object? Convert to PNG, then use the background remover to make the background transparent.
Shrink the PNGs for a website with Compress PNG, or resize them first with Max size (longest side).
Converting photos from an iPhone backup on a PC? Open the folder in File Explorer, press Ctrl+A and drag the selected files onto the box; if one file is damaged, the rest still convert.
Planning to check what a photo reveals before sharing it? The EXIF viewer shows date, camera and location.
HEIC to PNG Converter FAQ
How do I convert HEIC to PNG on Windows?
Open this page in Chrome or Edge, drag the HEIC files from File Explorer onto the box and press Convert. No HEIF or HEVC extension is required, because the converter brings its own decoder.
How do I convert HEIC to PNG on a Mac?
For one photo, open it in Preview and choose File → Export → PNG. For many, drop them here, convert and download a single ZIP of PNG files.
Should I convert HEIC to JPG or PNG?
JPG for sharing and uploading, because files are small and open everywhere. PNG for editing, design and printing, because it is lossless and survives repeated saves. Use HEIC to JPG for the first case.
Does converting HEIC to PNG reduce quality?
No. The photo is decoded once and stored losslessly, at full resolution on a computer. The file becomes bigger (our test photo grew almost nine times), but the picture is identical.
What is the difference between HEIF and HEIC?
HEIF is the container format; HEIC is HEIF with HEVC-compressed images, the variant phones use. This converter handles .heic, .heif and .hif files alike.
Can I keep the date and location when converting HEIC to PNG?
Yes. Switch on Keep metadata (EXIF) under Advanced settings and the camera, date and GPS details are written into the PNG. It is off by default, which is the safer choice for photos you will share.
What about Live Photos?
This page converts the still image of a Live Photo to PNG; the moving part is a separate short MOV file. To turn the clip into an animation, drop the MOV on MOV to GIF.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, so the photos never reach a server. After your first conversion you can disconnect from the internet and keep converting.
