Logos, product cut-outs and stickers saved from modern websites become lossless PNG files that every editor and design tool opens. How it runs

GPU canvas

AVIF to PNG or JPG: which is better?

Choose PNG when the AVIF has a transparent background or will be edited further; choose JPG when it is a photo you simply need to open or share. PNG is lossless and keeps the alpha channel, but files are big. JPG is small and universal, but fills transparency with a solid colour.

Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. AVIF can carry a full alpha channel, and PNG stores one too, so every transparent and partly transparent pixel is copied across unchanged. Drop shadows, anti-aliased edges and glass effects stay soft instead of turning into a hard outline or a white box.

This is the main reason to convert AVIF to PNG rather than to JPG. Some online shops and design sites deliver product cut-outs and logos as AVIF with a transparent background; as PNG they drop straight into Figma, Canva, PowerPoint or an older editor that cannot read AVIF.

What is an AVIF file?

An AVIF file is a still image encoded with AV1, the royalty-free video codec from the Alliance for Open Media, and stored in a HEIF-style container. It supports transparency, wide colour and HDR, and it squeezes images into very few bytes. That efficiency is why websites increasingly send AVIF to browsers that can show it.

The downside appears after you save the file. Desktop editors, office suites, older phones and many upload forms still do not read AVIF, so the image you downloaded is stuck until you convert it.

Is the conversion lossless?

The AVIF-to-PNG step is lossless: the decoded pixels are written to PNG without any new compression, at the original width and height. What PNG cannot do is undo the AVIF’s own compression, so if the AVIF was saved at a low quality, the PNG faithfully shows the same softness. The PNG uses 8 bits per colour channel, the usual depth for images on screens.

How to open AVIF files

Any current browser shows them: drag the file into Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Beyond the browser, support depends on the app and the system version, and Windows Photos needs Microsoft’s free AV1 Video Extension. When an app refuses the file, convert it: PNG if it has transparency, JPG if it is a plain photo.

Convert AVIF to PNG on any device

The converter runs in the browser, so these steps work without installing anything.

Windows 10 and 11

Open this page in Chrome or Edge, select the AVIF files in File Explorer and drag them onto the box. Press Convert, download the ZIP and extract it with right-click → Extract All. No AV1 extension is needed for converting.

Mac

Use Safari, Chrome or Firefox. Drag the files from Finder onto the box and download the PNGs; if the browser cannot decode a particular AVIF, the page switches to its own WebAssembly decoder.

iPhone and iPad

In Safari, tap the drop zone, choose the files from Files or Photos, convert, and save the PNGs to Files.

Android

In Chrome, tap the drop zone, pick the AVIF files from Downloads, convert, and the PNGs are saved to Downloads.

Why convert AVIF to PNG with ProMedia

  • Nothing is uploaded. Logos and product images under NDA stay on your device; upload-based converters receive a copy.
  • Batch conversion. Convert a full set of images at once; one damaged file does not stop the rest.
  • Its own decoder. Works even in browsers or on systems without AVIF support.
  • No cost, no watermark, no account, and offline use once the page and its decoder have loaded.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • PNG too large for your site? Shrink it with Compress PNG, which keeps the transparency, or convert it to WebP with the PNG to WebP converter.

  • Only need a photo to open somewhere? AVIF to JPG produces a file a fraction of the size.

  • Want a transparent PNG from an AVIF that has a solid background? Use the background remover after converting.

  • Huge AVIF images: set Max size (longest side) under Advanced settings to get a smaller PNG.

  • Converting a mixed download folder of AVIF, WebP and HEIC files? The image converter accepts all of them in one batch and lets you pick PNG as the output.

AVIF to PNG Converter FAQ

Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. PNG has a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are copied exactly. Nothing needs to be set; only JPG output fills transparency with a colour.

Should I convert AVIF to PNG or JPG?

PNG for images with transparency or for editing, because it is lossless. JPG for photos you want to share or upload, because the file is much smaller. AVIF to JPG has a quality slider.

What is an AVIF file?

An image compressed with the AV1 codec in a HEIF-style container. Websites use it because it is very small for its quality, but many apps and forms still cannot open it.

How do I open AVIF files?

Drag the file into a current browser to view it. To use it in an editor, an office document or a form that rejects AVIF, convert it to PNG or JPG first.

Why is the PNG so much larger than the AVIF?

AVIF is lossy and very efficient; PNG is lossless. Our 161 KB test photo became a 2.5 MB PNG. Graphics with flat colours grow much less than photos.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG in bulk?

Yes. Select as many AVIF files as you like, press Convert once and download all the PNGs as a single ZIP. There is no file count limit.

Is it safe to convert AVIF to PNG online?

Here it is, because the conversion never leaves your browser. The images are not uploaded, so there is no copy on a server and no waiting for a download link.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no upload limit because there is no upload. Very large photos can exceed what a phone browser can handle: Safari on iPhone and iPad lets a web page edit images of up to about 16 megapixels. There are no daily caps and no watermark.
